FOR REALZ THIS TIME

It's been my on my New Year's resolution list for the last 6 years, and with my job situation seemingly stabilized, and JTW in Japan for 2 years starting February, what better time than now.

Department 13 has evolved from a simple action comic in the original concept I developed in high school, into a much more complex semi-autobiographical action-drama. However, in the 6 years I've been toying around with the comic, I'VE STILL NEVER ACTUALLY DONE ANYTHING WITH IT. I think this may be partly because it would be a very personal story for me, and I don't think I had the emotional depth necessary to tell the story as well as it deserved to be told. According to JTW, it might also because I'm uncomfortable investing my emotions in my art, for fear that any criticism I receive would be a criticism of myself, and not the work. I think I have to agree with that to some extent, so part of this venture will be a therapeutic process for me, allowing me to bare my soul in my art, regardless of the criticism I may receive.

Another valid reason the comic hasn't been published yet is the glaring fact that I am very, very lazy.

At any rate, I'm going to add it to my New Year's resolutions again, and hopefully stick to it this time. Expect to see something besides a placeholder on d13-comic.com sometime soon, and look for regular comics there this summer.

Regarding medium, this style is what I'm leaning toward for the comic: Hand drawn characters, props, etc... on top of shopped-photo or CG backgrounds (as such, NeoTokyo may end up having some details that are reminiscent of Dayton, OH). The overall look is inspired greatly by Frank Miller, and Sin City in particular. This fits well to the mood I want to achieve. Also, it provides great artistic irony in that visually, everything is pure black and white, while one of the themes I plan to include in the series is the moral ambiguities the protagonists face.

In addition to reworking the concept over the years, I've been reworking some design, so look forward to seeing updated character designs in the coming months.
